Rediscover An Old Crafting Project Or Find A New Hobby Like Drawing
79New Year's Resolutions are beautiful and sparkly ideals that come to life on January 1st each year. Sadly, many New Year's Resolutions are so lofty that people are destined to fail right off the bat. Of course it is wonderful to set yourself on the right track by deciding to find a new job, lose weight, meet new friends, meet your soul mate, start a new hobby, finish an old project, or whatever your goal may be. However, do not get so caught up in the frenzy of over committing to your New Year's Resolution 180% to only set yourself up for disappointment. Many experts can give you great advice on how to start a new diet or find the best college this year, but my suggestion is to start with a more realistic goal, such as bringing more enjoyment to your leisure time. I love Anne Shirley's saying about how we can start each new day without regrets, which is far more realistic than many head in the cloud New Year's Resolutions. Decide this year you will finish an old crafting project, or start a new hobby to add quality to the quality of your free time. For goodness sakes, stop watching the clock and enjoy your life for a couple of hours at least! Spending time at the computer can be a fun and wonderful thing, but do any of us feel like maybe we could spend less time with the computer, cell phone, or TV? Use this New Year to finish an old crafting project or start a new one as a way to give new life to your imagination. I love how Graeme Edge, the drummer of the Moody Blues, once said that when you watch even the best movie it becomes stale after few or five viewings, but how listening to a song is much more creative because you become involved in the story line. The same is true for creating a beautiful painting, dusting off your laptop and finally setting aside time to write that book, or just taking the time to learn how to make simple jewelry. The added bonus of tackling a small, but enjoyable arts and crafts project means you will have far more motivation and drive to reach your bigger goals in life. Remember, all work and no play makes the Johns and Janes of the world very dull people, so grab a sketch pad, writing pad, beads, or whatever your addiction may be to discover some great new/old arts and crafts projects.
Start Drawing This Year
Start creating art for your own walls this year by drawing pictures of things you love and enjoy. For instance, if you love Hawaiian or tropical settings like I do, then you could find some beautiful pictures of sunsets to sketch. Decide if you prefer colored pencils, drawing pencils, charcoals, paints, oil pastels, or a mixture of all these mediums. Creating art for your own walls is so much less restrictive than taking an art class where the professor often tells you what to draw, but taking art classes this year can be a great way to start out if you want a few new ideas. Art classes are also a great way to meet new people, which kills to birds with one stone for those of us looking for new friends, and maybe new paramours. If going to an art class would conflict with your work schedule, or maybe you are too busy at home with the kids to go to brick and mortar classes. The good news is that with the world of online education you can take art classes online through schools such as the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.

My philosophy is: why pay twenty-five dollars for a bracelet you could make for a fraction of the price! Making your own jewlery does not only menan you save your money, but it is also a great way to relax and to express your own personality. When you buy a piece of jewelry at a department store it will reflect the ideas of the manufacturer, but when you create it from scratch it will speak for you and you alone. One thing I love about jewelry making is I can create unique and beautiful pieces in all colors to go with all of my outfits, which is much cheaper than if I went to Kohl's of JcPenny's to buy a few pieces. Do not get me wrong I think there are some beautiful pieces of jewelry at department stores, but I just prefer to create my own and not have someone else tell me how it should look.
Making jewelry is simple and to begin with you will only need a few supplies, such as:
- beading wire (memory wire is best)
- elastic cord
- a variety of beads
- pendants
- buttons (you can turn these into pendants and beads)
- wire cutters
- crimping pliers
- jewelry pliers
- crimp beads
- barrel clasps (my favorite type of clasps)
- any other jewelry supplies you can think of
The other day I received an email from a Hubpages user asking where I buy my beads, so I shared that I prefer to go to places such as Michael's Jo'ann's Fabrics, or Walmart to find jewelry making supplies, but you can also order these online from companies such The Beadery. This company is actually manufacturer of many of the beads I like to buy at Walmart and Jo'ann's Fabrics. One reason I really like The Beadery company is because many of their beads are produced in the US, which helps our local economy in these unsure economic times. The Beadery does specialize in making beads that appeal to adults, but another wonderful thing about their company is that many of their beads actually appeal to beginning crafters such as kids. Another wonderful way to start a new hobby this year is by sharing this with your kids, which is something that is easy to do when you can find beads that are suitable for little hands. So start a new hobby or rediscover a new one this year, but do not forget to have fun!

Sweetypie, what a coincidence! Just this morning I threw away dried up bottles of paint and kept back the good ones with the intention of doing some painting. Oh, no, I cant paint for peanuts, tho’ my sisters are all good painters, but I tried my hand at glass painting (all you have to do is to trace the pattern) and my work was passable..LOL.Maybe I'll take pictures of my sisters work and post it!Thanks for sharing this!
Yes..actually,digital photography is my only NewYear Resolution, sweetiepie. Otherwise,I dont generally make one for the simple reason ,I dont have to break it!LOL! Yes..will do a hub on my sister's works.
Sweetiepie: The leopard painting is a good one; wish I could draw. And, the sparkley pendant is one I would wear. I had blue sparkley earrings on today even if I am home; always liked accesories. I was thinking of taking up photography for the fun of it. I guess when I want to be inspired, I can go ahead and read one of your hubs!
I paint and exhibit each year with a local art group, and occassionally I get commissions, but the last two years I have been so focussed on studying and working that I've completed very little in the way of art. But this is my year I've decided. I jusy bought myself a copy of the Artists and Illustrators magazine, hoping for some inspiration, and now having read your excellent hub, I've just had another push in the right direction!
OK SweetiePie fess up you have been peeking in my unfinished projects cupboard, haven't you? And all my unfinished Hubs.
Alright I promise ,cross my heart, I will try and finish some of them this year!
great inspiration for us lazy people.
SweetiePie,
This hub is packed with information. I will have to spend 1/2 a day going to all of the links provided. Thanks for recollecting and sharing.
I do not make resolutions, not on a yearly basis. I more likely, try to take life by the day and goals by the week or month because it fits my lifestyle better. C.S.
You are a very talented lady. Thanks for sharing, I loved the necklaces.
Love the leopard drawing, maybe that could be one of my old crafting projects to bring out of the closet, drawing animals.
When I was in college I used to make swords out of wood all carved and decorated with collections of metal and other swirly bits and bobs on the handles, I used to get asked alot about where I bought them from and they used to be surprised when I said I made them...Yet another hubpage that I should get in the works this year!!!
If I have the time I think I will create some people I know a birthday card instead of buying one, they'll be distracted by the art on the card and effort I put into it to notice there will be no present to go with it..ha! Jobs a good un this year!!
Have a good evening, night ,morning or afternoon...I always get mixed up with global timezones...anyway!!
Nice Hub SweetiePie. You are so creative and artistic. I just love that 3D Birthday Card that you made. Very Nice. As I mentioned to you in another hub I think I'm going to try my hand at making a necklace this year and then who knows what else. I showed my daughter some pieces that you created and she liked them very much.
great ideas guaranteed to pull ya out of a slump!! About 10 years ago, I got the bug to draw. Like the way I do most things, it was a fever deep within and I drew nightly. I'd get home, do supper, and sit and draw what I called "impressions." I did cottages in fields, pebbled walks, flowers in field such as poppies, country roads....stuff i didn't even know was inside me. then, it left me. the desire comes and goes....I think it's dormant deep within...and one day will burst free....no telling what will happen then, look out Rembrandt!!!
Point is, we all have talents yet undiscovered...we just need "exposure." =))) thanks for helping encourage us all to reach in and produce!!
Your jewelry is so pretty...=))
(sorry for the long absence, was swamped at work and taking care of hubby, and kids, etc. LIFE!!!)
Thanks for great Hub and inspiration, SweetiePie.
I like your leopard, and first necklace the most. And admire your creativity and talent.
I also like to wear my on jewelry because it suits me the best. Anyhow, creativity also can be monetized (I use to sell my jewelry)....
Thanks for tips,,,,thumbs up!
Great ideas! I can't draw worth a hoot. I already make jewelry. I really want to learn to spin yarn. That's my goal for the year.
@Sweetie - Only two years at college before I got bored of educations or institutions, I soon found the internet and figured I'd learn a whole lot of stuff all by myself and here I am 4 years nearly to this day on the internet trying to make a living and quite nearly succeeding...ish.
Hi SweetiePie, I have been doodling with art lately. LOL Just to keep me relax in between paperwork. I'm having so much fun. :-) I love it that you compiled the different artworks you have been doing. I will link this again in my ripplemaker blog. Great work! And thanks for sharing the many things that you know.

SweetiePie- Nice collection of tidbits from various other creative hubs of yours. That leopard drawing is too good just like other paintings. And the videos are really helpful for someone interested in trying to make some simple fashion accessories. Another inspiring hub to take up arts as a hobby.
