Southern California Palm Trees

77

By SweetiePie

Southern California is the land of the palm tree. When orange fields were first cultivated here in California, palm trees were planted to help people find their homes in the middle of orange fields. Many cities have also landscaped their streets with palm trees of several different varieties, but only the the California Fan Palm (Washingtonia filifera) is only species that is native to Southern California. I grew up in the San Bernardino Mountains, so I always considered the San Bernardino Valley and the Inland Empire synonymous with palm trees. As I grew up I always enjoyed sketching pictures of palm trees, and I still do this quite often as an adult. I always imagined people making fans out of the palm fronds in years past, and there is just something very romantic and iconic about the palm tree.

Thanks for the awesome pics of palm trees. I've spent practically all my life in upstate New York, so palm trees are exotic, to me.

Paradise,

Growing up in the mountains made the palm trees somewhat special to me too, especially since I only saw these when I came down to the valley. As an adult I have never grown tired of seeing these palm trees in our somewhat rural city.

Very nice tour, thanks SweetiePie, I enjoyed the unique views you have chosen. Your palms certainly grow to a great height.

Some of our cities have many large palm trees, but of a different variety and not as tall.

Earnesthub,

This area used to be covered in orange fields, and I believe some of this palms are remnants from that time period. Many of these trees are about 80+ years old, the taller ones. I should have included that detail in my hub. Thanks for visiting and commenting.

prasetio30,

I am glad you enjoyed my Southern California palm tree virtual tour. As always I like your comments.

Oliversmum,

Thanks for voting my hub up. Yes, the clouds were quite amazing on the day I took this picture, so it made the palm trees more alluring. I appreciate you comments :).

I love palm trees - in fact that was the thing I was so excited about when I first stepped foot in California. We were visiting my husbands parents when we were on leave. It was the first time I had ever been to California and the first time I met them. Well, I had my video camera and I was so mesmorized by the palm trees I felt the need to video tape them. Of course, with a slip on the tongue I now have on video me saying, "Wow - look at all the pretty pine trees!" I still haven't lived that down to this day!

GrantGMcgowan,

Glad you enjoyed this hub.

Barbergirl28,

Well in a lot of parts of Southern California there are pine trees planted along with the palm trees, so maybe you saw one and accidentally said that when you also were seeing the pine trees :).
