Save Gas Money And Walk For Free
Are you looking for ways to get physically fit, and save a bit of money? One thing I think is not necessary is waiting until the new year to make a resolution to go to the gym, especially when you can start walking today. Have you ever considered walking to work rather than driving a gas-guzzling car? If you live close enough to work this might be a viable option. Not only could you save money by walking to work, but you might also be able to enjoy some beautiful scenery as well. Many cities have nature trails, and these would be much more enjoyable to walk along rather than sitting in a traffic jam. Yes, you might have to leave a little bit earlier if you plan on walking to work, but then you do not have to worry about going to the gym before or after a day at the office. Consider using Google maps to find city trails near you.
Not only is walking more and driving less a good way to build exercise into the day, but it also helps to let the world know you are protesting the high price of gasoline. At this point, I think all oil drilling is an outdated dinosaur that should be retired to the junk heap, but as you know from my previous hub, I do think what happened with BP could have happened with any oil company. The truth is oil drilling is antiquated, and we should be exploring alternative energy sources. Yes, I know most people are not going to become lifelong pedestrians like me, but I would like to encourage everyone to walk more and drive less. In gas consuming nations people are beginning to drive more than they really need to. Carpooling to work or taking public transportation are all ways that people can help cut down on gasoline consumption.
Riding a bike and walking are even better ways to help our environment. Of course, some continue to argue that air pollution and oil spills are not hurting our environment, but more and more, most people realize how ridiculous those assertions really are. So yes I know most people will not walk everywhere like I do, but I say we can all protest the oil drilling by walking one day a week somewhere that you would usually drive.
Dump the Pump Days
On June 17 of each year, we have Dump the Pump Day, and many transportation authorities offer free rides to people that present coupons. During the rest of the year, people can take public transportation to cut down on gasoline consumption. Some employers even enter employees in special drawings for prizes or offer other incentives for using public transportation and ride share programs.
Carpooling is another alternative if you happen to live in the same general vicinity as your co-workers. Yes, carpooling is not for everyone, but if you live here in California why not take advantage of those carpool lanes. Some employers even offer incentives for carpooling, so ask your HR department for more details.
Walking and biking are probably the best ways to dump the pump. Personally, I love the pace of walking, and I never feel overly rushed as I am walking briskly along. I never have to worry about fitting the gym schedule into my daily routine because my life is a gym.
Your employer might offer incentives for those who walk and bike to work, so it never hurts to ask. Even if your employer does not have incentive plans for walking and carpooling, at least you know you have done your part to cut down on gasoline consumption.
If you prefer to drive on your own vehicle, then at least consider buying an electric car when upgrading. However, it is always better to consider ways you can walk more and drive less!
