An Interview With The Artist Waynet
Wayne Tully is a talented artist who has produced a large portfolio of art work here on Hubpages, and his own websites. His articles and video tutorials are also very hands-on, and give artists at all levels tips on how to draw objects such as: fantasy castles, scary clowns, monsters, roses, and many other fascinating characters you can read about on his Hubpages profile. Mr. Tully has also written a wonderful collection of articles about the basic supplies needed for drawing, such as: art pencils, art sets, and sketching pencils. Of course you can always learn more by reading the articles available on his website, but the above articles are just of few key ones that are of interest to those who want to learn more about sketching.
Today I decided to email Wayne and ask him a few questions about what inspired him to become an artist and an online freelance writer:
What inspired you to become an artist?
I suppose it was at an early age, when I started to copy dragons and other fantasy related characters in books. I used to copy and draw anything that I liked and in this way I learned a lot about drawing, but perhaps the best inspiration I had was when I first started to collect comic books. The art was amazing and very stylized and to draw a visual narrative was just something that inspired me, particularly when I am really into my movies as well, so I was fascinated by stories and pictures combined.
Whilst at school, most of my drawings got onto the infamous teachers desk wall, which was the place that us kids would try to aim to get our drawings and art featured on. I remember the teacher at the time would announce each week who had made it onto the wall and nearly drawings that just didn't quite make it and I always remember the enthusiasm that teacher had to spend the time on our drawings and the positive praise she gave to us as little artists at the time was something that also inspired me.
What is your favorite website to share your art projects on and why?
I have accounts all over the place, but perhaps the best one is at Hubpages as I can write about anything to do with my art and the ease in which you can write at Hubpages is one of the best sites to share my art and future art projects which I have in the works.
If you happen to go to Hubpages and do a search for "draw fantasy art" there and you'll see many of my fantasy art drawing hubpages.
There is already a fantastic community of artists at Hubpages and it's great to mix with other artists over there, as well as gain new ideas and be inspired to start new projects that you may not do until you've seen someone else do them.
Second to hubpages is good old blogger.com. The ease to create free blogs there has made me create several blogs on the subject of art, although some just serve as backlinks to other sites, but I hope to, well eventually anyway, combine all of these into a network of other artist blogs, as I always thought about an artists network that would rely on all the effort of all of us as artists and create our own community. The idea is here, but something for the future I guess as all of this online stuff is very time consuming to say the least.
Do you have any of your own websites and blogs where you share your artistic knowledge?
Yes, I have a couple of blogs that I really need to post more on, as I have lots of material all mapped out for them, with more drawing tutorials and videos planned.
http://waynetullyfantasyart.blogspot.com- this is one that I want to expand on and provide a really good insight into fantasy art drawing, which will probably link to all of my other art links too. It will probably mean I will have to start over with a good domain name for it, but I'm prepared to do that as I'm sure I could make a success of it.
In fact what I am concentrating on is to have a website or blog that I focus on more with a proper domain name that could be something like draw fantasy art or tattoo art drawing and this would be the basis of something that I could expand on, I also have another blog - http://www.drawfantasy.com, which I really want to do more with, as at the moment I just backlink to my youtube account and other related hubpage art tutorials.
I noticed you have started selling some of your art work online, which sites do you use and why?
At the moment I am concentrating on Cafepress and Zazzle with the publish on demand way of earning money for designs which are printed on many gift ideas, but when I find the time I am going to go back to ebay and try and sell some more tattoo designs which I used to do over a year ago. I find ebay quite easy to list your stuff to sell and quite a challenge too, and also quite thrilling when you know someone has bought your work. Much like any other ways of selling your art online, it can take time and whilst you are waiting it is best to create a plan detailing your route through this area of making money online.
I will try other sites later on, but these are the three ones that I feel are good to use, together with their affiliate programs I can promote other artists too. I've been using Zazzle for over a year now and it's starting to pick up with sales and traffic, you can view my zazzle gallery here -

Do you have any advice to people who may also want to start selling their art work online?
Yes, from what I have researched, there are great ways online that are either low cost or free to try and sell your artwork, ebay was one I mentioned above, but also as well as finding websites to place your art on, I believe you have to know where the people who will be interested in your artwork hangout, is it in related forums? Or do they hide out on Youtube or Facebook? Also knowing what sites they arrived from and what keywords brought them there is equally important.
You should create one main site that just lists your art as a gallery, almost like an online portfolio, this provides a great way of showing the work you can do, if someone were to contact you for any work offers and you could also list any achievements towards your career goals too to provide a little related work history to do with your artwork.
And try and have your own website that you can sell paintings or drawings yourself, there is paypal that you can add to your site which will process payments, so it's always worth looking into making money from your art, anyway you can.
What is your favorite type of drawing technique and why?
My most preferred technique for drawing is to sketch quite quick, this way I can draw fast and create more ideas in a short space of time, I find sketching quickly keeps things spontaneous and although sketchy, they can be shaped and drawn to build up a drawing from scratch, you can create lots of characters and new designs in a day if you concentrated on this technique quite regularly, I do this two or three times a week and fill many sketchbooks with ideas, because if I didn't draw, I would fear that I would go mad, seriously.
Your YouTube videos on drawing are very informative and hands-on. Do you have a favorite video that demonstrates one of your preferred drawing techniques?
At the moment with my videos at http://www.youtube.com/user/WayneTully1. I'm still finding my feet with them, as I still have to create some really good videos that people are searching for, but perhaps my most popular video series on my video channel is my How to draw a flaming skull. It's in 6 parts
and it is these types of videos that I believe are more helpful to others who may view them, it's all very well doing time lapse videos of a masterpiece drawing, but I always think that people want to see the steps you take to complete a drawing in short videos that don't take up too much time.
Over the next years or so, I will focus on videos that cover other areas of fantasy art and not just the horror art area that I have been mainly focusing on. I want to draw fairies and some nice stuff too to balance out my demons and monster drawings and that's what you'll see.
Thanks for the interview Wayne, and I hope people make sure to check out many of your wonderful art tutorials right here on Hubpages!
