How To Plant A Garden In Containers

Updated on October 6, 2016

Even with a limited amount of space planting a container is quite manageable and easy to do on a limited budget. Actually, having certain constraints on your budget and limited space usually go hand and hand if you live in an apartment complex. Of course, there are people who live in rural areas who have limited budgets when it comes to buying garden supplies, but they can usually make up for the lack of funds with space and the rich natural soil at their disposal. If you only have a patio or a deck to garden on, then you will have to buy all your potting soil, and this initial cost can set you back a bit. However, you can buy potting soil in bulk if you want to save money, or you can buy a few small bags of organic potting soil even at the dollar store. Creating a compost heap is a good alternative if you do not want to spend money on buying organic potting soil, but I do not have the space to do that at an apartment complex. I will be going back to the dollar store in a few days to buy some more of the organic potting soil that used on my tomato plants last summer, and this really helped the plants thrive.

The video above shows what all the tomatoes plants looked like after I planted them on the first day.

For planting the tomato plants, pepper plants, and basil I simply dug holes in the containers and stuck the plants in. I only have two or three plants per container so these have enough room to grow, and there are cages to help them climb.

Marigolds are so easy to plant by just digging a hole in the potting soil and placing the plant in it. I water these every few days, and that is all that is really required. Buying two dollars worth of marigolds has given me some beautiful flowers to look at, smell, and use as a still live subject for my latest drawing.
