How To Make A Simple Valentine

Yesterday I was at the store buying a few groceries and I saw a few people complaining about the cost of Valentine's Day cards. You can always buy a package of Valentine's Day cards to save money, but quite a few people want to buy a special card for their significant other. Most of the nice individual cards can be a little pricey unless you stick to the ninety-nine cent cards. Not to sound like a penny pincher, but do you really have a dollar or three dollars to spend on a card right now? With a package of card stock you can make a cute and simple Valentine card with supplies from around your house, or you can even buy new markers, colored pencils, pencils, pens, or whatever type of supplies needed for making your card. Of course there is also the option of designing a card on the computer and priting it out, but for this hub I decided to make a simple Valentine's card that cost me absolutely nothing, except for the supplies I already had sitting around my house. So here are a few ideas on how to make a simple Valentine's Day card that will save you money this holiday season.  Here are the suggested supplies for this project:

  • A blank card.
  • A drawing pencil.
  • Water colored pencils.
  • Your imagination.

Here Is What We Will Be Making:

Making a simple Valentine is very easy.

Step One: Start With A Blank Card

Start with a blank card.

For this project you can either buy a package of blank cards or cut a piece of card stock down to size and fold it in half. I already had a package of blank cards and decided to use one for this Valentine's Day project.

Step Two: Draw A Heart

Draw a heart on the blank card.

For this step I decided to draw a heart on the blank car.  You can trace a heart shaped cookie cutter if you do not want to the draw the heart free hand.

Step Three: Color The Heart

Color in the heart shape.

For this step I decided to color in the heart shape with a pink colored pencil. Markers are also fun for using on card making projects.

Step Four: Continue Coloring The Heart

Continue coloring in the heart with the pink colored pencil.

Using water colored pencils make blending very easy. Be careful not to apply too much pressure to water colored pencils because I notice these break more easily.

Step Five: Use The Blending Stump

Use the blending stump to even out the heart.

Use the blending stump to further even out the shading inside the heart. Some people even like to take water and a paintbrush to actually "paint" their picture. However, card stock is not the best medium for painting, so it is good to use paper that is especially designed for water painting.

Step Six: Add A Small Accent Heart

Add a small accent heart.

To make this card more interesting and fun I decided to add a small accent heart. For the background I used a purplish colored pencil. Have fun experimenting with the different techniques when creating simple Valentine's Day cards.

Final Step: The Finished Card

Open the card to write a message to your Valentine.

Clara Ghomes,

A lot of the major adult Valentine's cards also have kid looking type images, so this one would be good for adults too. Of course drawing a more intricate card for an adult can be done easily by adding more detailing :).

Very nicely done!

To make a card would be more personal and to say and prove that you took the time to create your very own card is far more better than to spend a couple of minutes choosing one!

Totally cute! One year, I made a mini scrapbook using paper bags for my husband for v-day. This year, I planned on making my own cards and whatnot. Some of those cards are adorable, but a lot of them are upwards of $5 [especially the ones that talk/sing]. It's crazy.

waynet,

I am glad you too enjoy making your own cards. Maybe you should make a hub about about the type of cards you make. I am sure it would be great.

starkissed,

I agree some of the cards are really adorable, but the prices are high. Your scrabook card idea sounds really cute.

I just love your art work and demonstrations. I think this is a great reminder to start early enough to make those homemade valentine cards and save a few dollars. Valentines Day will be upon us quickly now. Homemade always spells out love just like in this hub. Thank you.

Dottie,

Thanks so much for saying so. I do put a lot of time in to my art projects, even little ones such as this. Up close it looks really nice because of the shading I did, which was a labor of love. I know graphics printed off a computer look very nice too, but there is just something nice about getting away from the computer to make a card :).

Sweetiepie,

I really think that the time for CHANGE and the handmade items are a good mesh. We need to get back to being more self reliant and this is a great show of effort. There was a time when we were so much more unique and creative than we are today. I love this hub. You are a wonderful example of making your own rules with this kind of work. Great job and thumbs up to you!

Thank you C.S. Alexis, I appreciate your kind words. I think you and Waynet both more than anyone I know here understand how valuable and precious great your own art work is. I hope your studio set up is going well by the way.
