How To Make A Pop-Up Card
76In September my friend is having another birthday, so I decided to make her a pop-up card. If you have been following my hubs you will see that in the past I have made stationery and other cards, so this time I decided to try something different. In elementary school we had learned how to make a pop-up book to illustrate the life cycle of a lady bug, so I thought this same process could be applied to making pop-up cards. As I have said in the past handmade cards are much more enjoyable than store bought ones, but it is fun to replicate some of the types of cards sold in stores. One of the popular cards I have seen are pop-up cards, but handmade ones are much more creative and fun to make. The inspiration for this card is a picture of two African lions a lady had taken on a safari. This lady gave my co-worker a large bag of pictures she had taken of beautiful animals in Africa, but these were just being stored and not used, so I asked if I could take them home. Now I am using these beautiful pictures as inspiration for my art work and cardmaking. As I said it is easy to find many original pictures without taking pictures of celebrities off the Internet, but that is another story for another time.
Here Is What The Finished Product Will Look Like:
Step 1: Find A Blank Piece Of Cardstock
Use a ruler to find the center of the page. Next, use the ruler to draw a straight line across the center of the cardstock, which will allow you to divide it in half.
Step Two: Find The Center Of The Page
Step Three: Draw A Box In The Center Of The Page
Use a ruler to draw a square on the top half of the page. Next, use the ruler to draw a square on the bottom half of the page. The ruler is our friend, so make sure to use it to ensure that the squares are both centered and even.
Step Four: Making The Card "Pop-Up"
If you enjoy watching video demonstrations, please do so. However, I would like to explain the process for making the card pop-up for those who may not be able to watch videos over dial-up modems. First, make sure the cardstock is folded in half.
Refer to the blue arrows and only cut the vertical lines on your page. Once finished, pop-out the squares by folding along the lines. Watch the video above for more suggestions on how to do this, but it is very easy. The next step is the color the cardstock because this will be the background for the pop-up card. Since my pop-up card has a safari theme, I used a green colored pencil to greate a grassy background.
Step Five: Color/Draw/Design The Background
Step Six: Create The Pop-Up Image
A couple of months ago my co-worker was given a large bag of pictures a friend had taken on an African safari. There were so many beautiful pictures of African animals in this bag, but my co-worker had no use for it and was going to store it in the basement at work. I asked if I could have the bag of pictures, which I now can use as images for my Hubs, webpages, and art work. If you are creative and take the time to look around you can always find new and original pictures to use in your hubs, or for your art work. I love this image of two lion mates sitting together in the grass, so I decided to make my card around this theme. When creating your pop-up image it can be as simple or as complicated as you would like. Even consider using pictures if you do not want to draw or use a computer to design your pop-up image.
Step Seven: Glue The Pop-Up Image To The Background
Sewing The Card Together
In this video segment I demonstrate how to sew together the pop-up card. Glue can be used to attached the front cover to the pop-up card, but I prefer to sew it on. Sew on cards adds a homemade touch and I love the look of it. I hope you get inspiration to make your next pop-up card, which will be much better than any card you could buy in the store. Happy crafting!

This is quite crafty and looks like fun!
btw - I think B.T. Evilpants on Hub Pages should contract with you to do pop-up invitations to vote for him in 2008.
This is Great !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will be able to use this with my granddaughters and they will think that I am soooo smart. Thumbs up and Stumble. ~ eddie
Excellent idea, but I would need them with my picture inside. I would need to see a sample (and I would never just copy the sample a million times to avoid paying).
Pop-up cards - I love them, full of fun and artistic. I had had some such greeting cards and story books of this pop-up kind, it was long back. I think I will try making one after reading this hub.
It's very nice that you put your skills together(art + digital work in photoshop). Your hubs and your narration style are always inspiring me. Thanks for it. Thumbs up! :)
What a romantic way to touch my girl's heart with a self-made pop up card on Valentine's day.. the pop ups being her and me. Thanks for sharing this gift with us Sweeti Pie... The video was good and you are a beautfiful girl with the loveliest of voices. Thank you for everything My Sweet Angel
Very nice presentation Sweetiepie. Love your YouTube movies. Can you tell me what camera you use.
I don't know if it is my computer or not but the pictures were very dark and I could not make out some of the line work.
Great details. I believe anyone could make a pop up card following your directions.
Sweetie Pie, you are a sweetie pie, Wow- Nice work.
Cute hub. It seems pretty easy to make. I think I'll make one for my bf but his birthday is not until March. :-)
That was a really neat demo, SweetiePie. You make it sound so easy. Maybe old magazines with plenty of pictures, like National Geographic or Antiques, could be good sources of inspiration, too. Thumbs up!
one of the most tutorials i ever read, and i can really add my touch to the card
thnx alot :)
keep hubbing great hubs
Hey! I thought there is another step between Step 5 and Step 6?
Now these are the kind of popups i like SweetiePie!!, You made it look very simple..:)
You are such a girly girl! I am too and love to make girly arts and crafts like this!
WOW!! Great Idea and I will have to try this. I usually do my artwork on the computer then take a printout. Btw is their any way we can include the sound in the card when the card is opened. (I mean are those available outside which we can buy with a popular song like jingle bells..)
Btw did you unpublish any of your hubs recently? Hope that comment wasn't so bad that it affected you to unpublish it. You always write straight from the heart and I love all your hubs.
SweetiePie- Well you mentioned in my hub that a long comment was left and then I checked your profile history an unapproved comment was included but the hub wasn't available then I asked that question. Yes I agree sometimes it is best if we keep certain things under wraps. For a woman it is better to err on the side of caution(and also you mentioned about yourself which is a big NO NO in a man's world). For men it maybe boastful(popular among other men) but for women it seems we would be considered with having lesser "morals". We can't do anything about the double standards. It is better to be safe then sorry. I hope you didn't get affected adversely by that one comment and the subsequent email you received.
Wow! I loved your Hub and soon would try my hand in making one.
SweetiePie- I too feel some times when I get unregistered comments (which are not even proper sentences and some straight away say "you are sinner and will go to hell") and mails(lengthy emails about I need to checkout this website to be saved) about that "It's Ok not to be a christian" and feel I should unpublish it. Some times if I think too much I will never be able to say about anything then. I don't do much besides working 60 hours(work has increased with out increase in recruitments or pay raise but still in this economy glad to still have a job) a week and feel so tired to write about anything. I work day and night run some work related tests in the background while simultaneously get on HP. Sometimes I feel life would be much simpler just get married and be a good wife staying at home to raise the kids.
Actually the boy is also from US (that's why I agreed to meet him at my parents place). I haven't spoken to him yet and will do so only after formal introductions. Still a long way to go and nothing is certain as of now. I had my share of career and now just want to relax for a while. Lets see I don't know what life has in store for me. I have reached the borderline and by next year will be the oldest girl(in our extended family) to be married (not a record that I want to be proud of). To a certain extent I achieved whatever goals I had and now looking forward to the next phase in life.
I hope you also find some one who appreciates, understands and respects you. I am sure you will be a wonderful life partner to some lucky man.
SweetiePie- Sometimes a guy who is a little shy may take someone along for moral support(I don't know if guys do that). My cousin when she was asked out by her husband before marriage then she took me along. I was doing more talking then her (and now he jokes saying that he was more impressed by me than her)...LOL
Do you have a close knit family/friends circle who try to pair up with some one? That blind date thing could be scary (I heard of some stories like date rape and all). I will checkout cherish77 hubs. I guess you are lucky to live in a society where marriage isn't a compulsory evolutionary process. In our societies by 25 girl has to be married then within 2 years of marriage a kid and so on. But since I am benefiting by the system (I never had to worry even a single day checking out someone for myself and always knew that it is my parents job hence I just focussed on my studies and career). I know it is tough to think from my point of view but that is the way most of us in our family think.
I do hope you meet someone to share your joy and spend the rest of the life. Now since you have your sister with you to a certain extent it is soothing. I don't know since I was a kid I always thought my dad would find someone like him whom I can love, respect and admire for the rest of my life. In another 10 days I am leaving for India and have some last minute shopping to do and some work related stuff to complete. On top of that I am getting nervous for the first time in my life about meeting the guy for the first time. Btw I am sorry for the delay in response and I just happened to remember this conversation and checked back now.
SP- That is something I never understood why the age gap can't be reversed. Is it due to the fertility factor for women is limited or men feel less mature compared to women of the same age.Yes, fathers are very important and if father is the sole bread earner it complicates the problem. More ever their is a psychological reassurance in a father figure for a girl.
I know marriage requires compromise and adjustments but if some of the things that are of topmost priority are intact then other areas one can give in a little. Yes true happiness is a state of mind and hope nothing anybody says ever affects you. Even though you are single but I do hope you are ready to mingle. It is more important to marry the right person than at the right time. Thanks for your warm wishes and wish the same for you.
