How To Make A Palm Tree Inspired Valentine's Day Card

Updated on October 6, 2016

Here is another palm tree inspired Valentine card to celebrate my love of nature. There is this romantic notion about how Valentine's Day has to be about the love a couple shares, but that is not what V-Day is about for me. Today I have decided Valentine's Day is about my love of nature and palm trees, and creating cards inspired by the beauty of the world around me. You do not need to be in a relationship to enjoy Valentine's Day, and I have decided to make it a day about crafty and drawing things I consider aesthetically pleasing, such as drawings for my handmade cards. My goal is to make every holiday about drawing and crafting things I love, and to stop dwelling on the things that I do not have. If you open your eyes to the world around you, it is so beautiful and serene. No one can dictate what love and beauty is about, and for me love is about admiring the glorious tranquility of palm trees.

Today I decided to draw a card that illustrates my love of palm trees and hearts, and thus I made the sunset with a heart shape. The sun may not be in the real shape of a heart, but this is a surrealistic take on the setting sun.

In the video above I explain how I created the illustration for my palm tree heart sunset card. Watch this video to get a few ideas on how to create your own palm tree illustrations, or watch some of my other drawing videos on YouTube. I am always creating new things on my channel, and I love to share my creative inspiration in hopes it motivates others to create things.

During this phase of the drawing I shaded in the water next to the palm and the planter that it lives in.

I finished the card by using a chrome colored pencil to color in the deck where the palm tree is planted. My handmade cards often feature my own drawings, such as with this palm tree heart sunset card.

Above is a scan of my completed drawing for the palm tree sunset heart card that I created for Valentine's Day. I used a sky blue colored pencil to fill in the color of the ocean, a crimson red colored pencil to fill in the color of the sunset heart, and dark chrome colored pencil to fill in the color of the deck where the palm tree is sitting. The pot that the palm tree is planted in was shaded in with a chocolate brown colored pencil. As you can see from my various art projects, colored pencils are one of my favorite mediums.

Card Making Supplies

Card making supplies can be as simple as using computer paper to make your quarter fold cards that you draw pictures on, or more complex with the purchase of cardstock specifically for such projects. The beauty of making your own cards is you get to decide what type of supplies go into the making rather than having someone else make these decisions for you.
