How To Make A Palm Tree Inspired Valentine's Day Card

By SweetiePie

I have decided to create a palm tree inspired Valentine card to celebrate the love of life and nature. There is this romantic notion about how Valentine's Day has to be about the love a couple shares, but that is not what V-Day is about for me. Today I have decided Valentine's Day is about my love of nature, and creating cards inspired by the beauty of the world around me. You do not need to be in a relationship to enjoy Valentine's Day, and I have decided to make it a day about creating things I consider aesthetically pleasing, such as drawings for my handmade cards. Make the holiday about nature and sketching it, and stop dwelling on the things you do not have. If you open your eyes to the world around you, it is so beautiful and serene. No one can dictate what love and beauty is about to you, and as for me, these two things are truly about nature.

I designed a handmade Valentine card with my drawing of a palm tree with a sunset heart.

Today I decided to draw a card that illustrates my love of palm trees and hearts, and thus I made the sunset with a heart shape.

In the video above I explain how I created the illustration for my palm tree heart sunset card.

I created a sketch a palm tree next to the ocean with a heart sunset.

During this phase of the drawing I shaded in the water next to the palm and the planter that it lives in.

I finished the card by using a chrome colored pencil to color in the deck where the palm tree is planted. My handmade cards often feature my own drawings, such as with this palm tree heart sunset card.

Here is my completed illustration of the palm tree heart sunset.

Above is a scan of my completed drawing for the palm tree sunset heart card that I created for Valentine's Day. I used a sky blue colored pencil to fill in the color of the ocean, a crimson red colored pencil to fill in the color of the sunset heart, and dark chrome colored pencil to fill in the color of the deck where the palm tree is sitting. The pot that the palm tree is planted in was shaded in with a chocolate brown colored pencil. As you can see from my various art projects, colored pencils are one of my favorite mediums.

Card Making Supplies

Card making supplies can be as simple as using computer paper to make your quarter fold cards that you draw pictures on, or more complex with the purchase of card stock specifically for such projects. The beauty of making your own cards is you get to decide what type of supplies go into the making rather than having someone else make these decisions for you.
