A Flower Button As A Pendant On A Necklace

Updated on August 23, 2016

Do you enjoy wearing floral inspired jewelry? Flower buttons can make wonderful pendants for handmade necklaces. As I am searching the aisles of the crafting store, my quest is to find inspiration to create a unique piece of jewelry. Thus, sometimes I like to use buttons as pendants because these are unexpected baubles on a necklace. The supplies I used for this project included:

  • beading wire
  • glass beads
  • beading wire cutters
  • jewelry pliers
  • a barrel clasp
  • a flower bead used as the pendant

The tutorial below will demonstrate how I made this necklace with the flower button pendant. If you enjoy all things floral, making a necklace with a flower bead as a pendant is a crafty project to try today!

Here is the necklace I made with the flower button.

In the photo above I am wearing a floral dress with my flower necklace. As you can see, I truly love all things flower related when it comes to my clothes and jewelry. Years ago someone complained that my photo album was full of flower pictures, but I cannot help photographing things that inspire me. I also love to create floral artwork, so you can check out some of my other hubs, or my website if you would like to see some of these flower related projects. Now it is time to get to discussing how I created the flower pendant necklace.

Step One: Slip On The Flower Button

Slip the flower button on to the beading wire.

Use the wire cutters to snip off enough beading wire for the necklace. I prefer a slightly longer necklace, so measure and plan accordingly. For this necklace I cut off about eighteen inches of beading wire, which allowed for adding a clasp to the necklace at the end. To add the flower button to the wire, simply thread it through the holes of the button. Place the button on the center of the wire since it will the the pendant on the necklace.

Step Two: Slip On The Shell Beads

Slip the shell bead on each side of the button.

In this step I added a blue shell bead to each side of the pendant. The shells are iridescent beads that will lend more visual interest to the necklace.

Step Three: Start Adding The Glass Beads

In this step I begin adding the glass beads.

In this step I started adding the pretty purple and bluish glass beads to the necklace. I love how these multicolored beads can reflect so many hues, and go with many multi-color outfits. The multi-color properties of these beads remind me of flowers with more than one color.

Step Four: Continue Adding The Beads

In this step I continue adding the beads to the necklace.

Keep adding the beads and remember this is the most exciting part of the process: watching the necklace take shape.

Step Five: Half Way There!

The necklace has reached the half way point.
The necklace has reached the half way point.

Here the necklace is half way completed! I am always elated once I am to the mid-way point with making my necklace, which serves as a good opportunity to give your hands a short rest. Sometimes when I get into a jewelry making slump, and tell myself I will reward myself with a treat once I am half-way through working on a necklace project. This is good motivation to continue with the necklace, and prevents crafty projects from being abandoned.

Step Six: Almost Finished

The necklace is almost complete.

The slight bend of the necklace has an almost artistic feel to it.  I was almost finished with the necklace and too this shot, which turned out very beautiful.  I love the way these multicolored beads shimmer.

Here is my pretty necklace finished above, and now it is ready to wear. Sparkly jewelry can have a simple design, and making such a necklace is a diverting way to spend an afternoon. If you try making such a necklace, I hope you have fun finding the floral bead to be used as a pendant in your design.

Homemade multicolor necklaces like this one will go with many vibrant outfits in my wardrobe. Do you need more necklace making inspiration? Here is another necklace making video to watch.

The necklace I created in the video above had a butterfly bead used as the pendant, which illustrates how any type of bead can be turned into a focal point for a necklace.
