How To Make A Cat Christmas Card

By SweetiePie

Before December 25th people are always scrambling to purchase and send out the perfect Christmas card, but have you ever considered creating a handmade card? Consider this hub the holiday card website for all the inspiration you will need when it comes to card making. For this cat Christmas card I drew and painted a picture inspired by Bobby, my manx kitty that I often feature in my art work. This is a depiction of what she would have looked like as a kitten with a Santa hat on. For some reason I have always loved the idea of dressing dogs and cats up in Santa hats, so I thought this would be a fun Christmas card image for this year. First I sketched out the picture of Bobby next to two ornaments, with a Santa hat on. Next I used tempra paint to add color to this fun card. Since I enjoyed this image I decided to let it dry, and scanned it for future use. To make Christmas cards for people I simply used a photo editing program and placed the image onto a card template. Watch how I created this fun Christmas kitty card.  When you make a cool card like this one there is now need to spend your extra cash on holiday discount card.  You will be able to spend it your extra cash on more gifts!

Step One: Sketch Out The Cat

First I made a really quick sketch of my cat Bobby. I added two Christmas tree balls, and added the words Merry Christmas!  Now I am going to fill my illustration in with color.  Usually I enjoy painting with oil, but on card stock I decided tempra paint might work better.  I was really excited to use tempra paint again as this is the first time I have really used it since high school.

Step Two: Use The Red Paints

Here I used the red tempra paint to fill in the Christmas balls.  The white paint was great for highlighting the Christmas balls.

Step Three: Add Blue To the Background

There is no actual sky in this picture, but I have always enjoyed painting on blue for the faux sky!

In many pictures I draw and paint I enjoy creating an imaginary sky, and blue just a soothing color to add to a painting.  Also, it allows us to focus on the focal part of the picture, which is the cat.

Step Four: Add The Gold Detailing

Since I did not have gold paint I decided to use a colored pencil to fill in the top of the Christmas ball ornament.  Mixed media is a great way to use a variety of colors in paintings and drawings, which helps to cut down on the price of supplies.

Step Four: Add The Black Fur

Here I have filled in Bobby cat's black fur.

In this step I filled in Bobby's black fur with a permanent marker. I had black paint on hand, but I decided to use the permanent marker so the painting could dry faster. Also, a marker is bit easier for the small details than using paint. Overall I am very happy with this card since I only spent about an hour on it. Tempra paint tends to make the card stock puff up a bit, so I used a couple of objects to flatten the card back out. Once the card I dried over night I scanned the image, and used it for the Christmas cards I printed out. I plan use this original image either for a card, or I shall frame it. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year with your card making adventures. Always feel free to come back to Hubpages to keep up with mine.

Here is a fun gift idea: consider making cat Christmas ornaments to match your cat Christmas cards.  Your friends will be impressed that you spent the extra time to make them such stylish and thoughtful gifts!

C.S. Alexis,

Thanks! You know I love cats :).

Hello, hello,

I appreciate your nice comments!

Paradise,

Yes I really do like Bobby cat. I think I am a bit attached to her :).

lorlie,

I love handmade cards, these are just so much better than ones printed in China. I almost bought Christmas cards, but I told myself I could not do it. It takes longer to draw and paint a picture, and then print out images to make multiple cards, but the effort is so worth it!
