How does a person create art for their abode? For this project, I drew a Hawaiian sunset. Many times I hear people say they must pay a large sum of money to buy a beautiful piece of art or even a vase. One lady confessed she was cheap because she only paid twelve dollars for a beautiful vase. In my book, the twelve dollars may have been way too much considering a number of beautiful items people throw away every day. Go to the second-hand store, and for a couple of dollars, you can find vases and picture frames in pristine condition. For this art project I bought a frame from the dollar store, and it looks just as nice on the wall as a thirty dollar frame. If you want a higher quality frame to go to the second-hand store and buy one. Yes, I have found designed frames at the thrift store, and these are often given away just because there might be a small knick. Some are in pristine condition, and it looks like people just donated an unwanted gift. The point of this art project is to use what you already have or to spend very little in creating it. Here are the supplies that I used for creating my wall art:

  • Recycled computer
  • A drawing pencil.
  • Watercolor pencils.
  • A dollar store picture frame.
  • A screwdriver.
  • A hammer.
  • A picture hanger.

For this entire art project I spent about a dollar, and the time it took me to draw the picture. One of my favorite things to do is draw pictures of Hawaii, and to draw sunsets and palm trees. I used the backside of a printed document to save paper, which also cuts down of the price of supplies for this project. If you feel you cannot draw a picture then try this exercise and see how easy drawing can be. Besides, this piece of art is for your own eyes and not for the world to see, unless of course, you want the world to see it.

Step One: Draw Your Picture

Draw a picture of anything you like. I choose to draw a picture of a Hawaiian sunset based on several pictures I have. I love Hawaiian sunsets and part of me wishes I was there right now, especially when it is fifty degrees outside today. Pick a picture you love and draw this on the blank side of a piece of used printer paper. Next, add color to the sketch with colored pencils.

Step Two: Decide When The Drawing Is Completed

Take your time and decide when the drawing is completed. When satisfied it is time to select the frame for the drawing.

Step Three: Select A Frame

Select a picture frame for displaying your hand drawn art work. For this project I selected a diploma frame from the dollar store because these are large enough for documents that are eight by ten inches. The most important thing to remember is to measure the drawing to make sure the picture frame you choose is large enough.

Step Four: Put The Picture In The Frame

Use a screwdriver to take the back off the picture frame.

Step Five: Close Up The Frame

Step Six: Hang The Picture On The Wall

Take a hammer and nail a picture hanger to the wall. These are sold at Wal-mart, Target, Lowe's, Kmart, Jo'ann's, and most other larger stores that have a hardware department. At Jo'ann's Fabrics picture hangers are sold in the picture frame department. Picture hangers are cheap and only make a small hole in the wall, which can be covered up with spackle when you decide to take the picture off the wall.
