Kona Hiking Ideas
Hike with the Kona Hiking Club, which plans many hikes throughout the year at set times, dates and locations. Remember to bring water, sun block, food, protective shoes and clothing and a first aid kit before when planning to meet up with the Kona Hiking Club.
Hiking in the Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park is another way you can explore Kona on foot. Take a hike down the 1871 trail in Pu`uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, which is of interest for those who like to view traditional Hawaiian sites such as heiau (platform temples), which pre-date the arrival of Europeans to the islands. Make sure to bring enough cash, as admission to the park is two dollars per person.
Go for a hike on Captain Cook Monument Trail, which ends at the monument commemorating to the location where Cook was slain by the Hawaiians who felt he had over stayed his welcome. Visiting this monument is of interest of anyone who enjoys eighteenth century naval and Hawaiian history, and the view and swimming at Kealakekua Bay is worth the trek. Hiking this trail will take you on a 1,375-foot plunge to the monument below and a precipitous climb back to the top. This is a rugged trail, so be careful hiking down and back up.
Hiking in Kona can be an adventure in itself, so make sure to explore this part of the Big Island at your own pace. Pick up a bag of Kona coffee to enjoy after your hike, which is a great reward for a day of moderate to rugged exertion. Mahalo and have fun!

Hi Sweetie Pie! When I was around 15 years old, I was lucky enough to visit a friend of mine on the Big Island. Her mother ran a cattle ranch, and we girls ran amok on the beaches of the Kona Coast. We didn't hike, but we should have! Instead we'd gawk at the huge Marlins caught at the Billfishing Tournaments and lurk around all the shops!
The Big Island is a place I will never forget.
Thanks for the hub and the memories.
That must be a real experience. Thank for introducing it. Very ingteresting hub.
Being an islander I can truly appreciate what you describe. The fact that you enjoy writing on the subject suggests that you might enjoy reading my hub about hiking the entire coast of the big island of Puerto Rico. Check it out! Blessings to you and yours, JR
Did my comment seem like self promotion? I'm sorry about that, my bad. I'll remember to be more careful in the future. Thanks for not quite pointing it out. LOL. Blessings, JR
I know you have lots of walking experience-- hope you get to do this one someday.
